The long lens, even a longish one like my 75mm, is a way to get closer to your subject but also a way to compress an area. So much so that one might think that the subjects are on top of each other in real life. I rarely take my 75mm out; it’s heavy and big on a Leica M body, not very practical on the street. One needs to have a specific goal and subject to take it with you. I’m told that photographer Saul Leiter, whose work with colour film in the 50’s helped recognize colour photography as art, used to use such a focal length often, and his style of street photography tended towards the abstract as he would isolate his subjects more as geometric figures and colours than as people interacting with each other. //

L’objectif long, même un objectif peu long comme mon 75 mm, est un moyen de se rapprocher de son sujet mais aussi une façon de comprimer une zone. À tel point que l’on pourrait croire que les sujets sont superposés dans la réalité. Je sors rarement mon 75 mm ; il est lourd et encombrant sur un boîtier Leica M, pas très pratique dans la rue. Il faut avoir un objectif précis et un sujet particulier pour l’emporter avec soi. On m’a dit que le photographe Saul Leiter, dont le travail avec la pellicule couleur dans les années 50 a contribué à faire reconnaître la photographie couleur comme un art, utilisait souvent ce type de focale, et que son style de photographie de rue tendait vers l’abstraction car il isolait ses sujets davantage en figures géométriques et en couleurs qu’en personnes interagissant entre elles.
