Always be with your camera. It’s a mantra that we know very well. I’m always with my camera. So one weekend before Easter, we came out of the movie theatre (we saw Project Hail Mary, go see it, it’s very good), looking for a katsu place on Maisonneuve West near Guy Street, when all of a sudden there were lots of police cars around, blocking cars’ access to this usually busy street: « there was a demonstration » I thought, one of those Down with Trump demos, or an antiwar one? But no, instead, it was a surprising Palm Sunday on Saturday procession in the middle of Downtown Montreal. Of course, I had my camera with a 50mm lens attached to it (it was in my bag but I had it!) and I began to shoot, paying a little bit of attention to the focus but not too much, I was at f/8 or f/11. The light was starting to go as it does around 4 p.m. in late March, so right away I chose to make a little abstract with a slow shutter speed. This one picture I chose mainly because of the red coat and how you can make out the palms and the people. In post-processing, I boosted the colours, hyping the saturation with my usual Kodachrome 200 simulation.

Soyez toujours avec votre appareil photo. C’est un mantra que nous connaissons très bien. Je suis toujours avec mon appareil photo. Ainsi, un week-end avant Pâques, nous sommes sortis du cinéma (nous avons vu Projet Hail Mary, allez le voir, c’est très bon), à la recherche d’un restaurant de katsu sur Maisonneuve Ouest près de la rue Guy, quand tout à coup il y avait plein de voitures de police autour, bloquant l’accès à cette rue habituellement très animée : « il y avait une manifestation » ai-je pensé, une de ces manifs À bas Trump ou une contre la guerre? Mais non, c’était plutôt une surprenante procession des Rameaux, un samedi, en plein centre-ville de Montréal. Bien sûr, j’avais mon appareil photo avec un objectif 50 mm (il était dans mon sac mais je l’avais!) et j’ai commencé à photographier, en faisant un peu attention à la mise au point mais pas trop, j’étais à f/8 ou f/11. La lumière commençait à tomber comme elle le fait vers 16 h à la fin mars, alors j’ai tout de suite choisi de faire un petit effet abstrait avec une vitesse d’obturation lente. Cette photo, je l’ai choisie surtout à cause du manteau rouge et de la manière dont on distingue les rameaux et les gens. En post-traitement, j’ai renforcé les couleurs, en poussant la saturation avec ma simulation Kodachrome 200 habituelle.
