The workflow

The act of photographing is the act of seeing. How many times did I pass by this restaurant on Peel Street and not notice this mosaic mirror over the years? Hundreds of times? Possibly. But not this time on a late summer morning when I was « desperate » for an original image of a scene I had seen a thousand times. It’s the main difference between travelling to a new city for a short time where everything is new and living and shooting in your city, looking for a new take on the familiar. Sometimes you can’t « see » anything and you really have to work at observing, pushing your imagination past the cliché and obvious shots. You get to wait for the right time (if you have the patience) or you get to come back if the light isn’t cooperating. //

L’acte de photographier est l’acte de voir. Combien de fois suis-je passé devant ce restaurant sur la rue Peel sans remarquer ce miroir en mosaïque au fil des ans ? Des centaines de fois ? Possiblement. Mais pas cette fois, par un matin de fin d’été, lorsque j’étais « désespérée» de trouver une image originale d’une scène que j’avais vue mille fois. C’est la principale différence entre voyager dans une nouvelle ville pour une courte période, où tout est nouveau, et vivre et photographier dans sa propre ville, en cherchant un nouveau regard sur le familier. Parfois, on ne « voit » rien et il faut vraiment travailler à observer, pousser son imagination au-delà des clichés et des prises de vue évidentes. On peut attendre le bon moment (si l’on a la patience) ou revenir plus tard si la lumière ne coopère pas.
