Let’s talk about exposure and how little it matters nowadays. This picture was very quickly taken from a metro wagon at a stop. If you look at the original, it is very much under-exposed. A dark subway station, relatively low ISO 6400, and a high shutter speed will give you that result. Should you try to recoup this image? It all depends on your tolerance for grain or noise. I don’t particularly care. Turns out to be an interesting slice of Montreal life under all that darkness. //
Parlons de l'exposition et de son importance de nos jours. Cette photo a été prise très rapidement depuis un wagon de métro à un arrêt. Si vous regardez l'original, elle est vraiment sous-exposée. Une station de métro sombre, un ISO relativement bas de 6400 et une vitesse d'obturation élevée vous donneront ce résultat. Devriez-vous essayer de récupérer cette image ? Tout dépend de votre tolérance au grain ou au « noise ». Personnellement, cela ne me dérange pas particulièrement. La photo s'avère être une tranche intéressante de la vie montréalaise sous toute cette obscurité.

Someone once asked me why I do those blurry pictures? I answered that for me it’s like painting; I get to paint with light by slowing down the shutter. Here it’s basically a rainbow of vegetables. So of course the main add-on to this is saturation of colour. It’s not always successful: here the missing element is probably that you can’t really identify the subject. //
Quelqu'un m'a un jour demandé pourquoi je fais ces photos floues ? J'ai répondu que pour moi, c'est comme peindre ; je peux peindre avec la lumière en ralentissant l'obturateur. Ici, c'est essentiellement un arc-en-ciel de légumes. Bien sûr, l'élément principal ajouté à cela est la saturation des couleurs. Ce n'est pas toujours réussi : ici, l'élément manquant est probablement le fait que l'on ne peut pas vraiment identifier le sujet.

So here I was at the Jean-Talon Market in the middle of winter with my little 50mm lens, and I spotted this very cosy bird feasting on the fresh produce without paying! I could not get any closer for fear I would scare it away and blow my picture. In the post-processing, I tried to underline it as much as possible in this sea of colours by darkening around it as much as possible while still keeping the sense of the market. I tried also to up the texture and structure on the bird to make it more visible. I would have cropped even more, but with 26MP available to me, you might lose details on the bird, and also you lose the context. //
Alors, me voici au Marché Jean-Talon en plein hiver avec mon petit objectif de 50mm, et j'ai repéré cet oiseau très confortable festoyant sur les produits frais sans payer ! Je ne pouvais pas m'approcher davantage de peur de l'effrayer et de gâcher ma photo. Pendant le post-traitement, j'ai essayé de le souligner autant que possible dans cette mer de couleurs en assombrissant autour de lui autant que possible tout en gardant le sens du marché. J'ai aussi essayé d'augmenter la texture et la structure sur l'oiseau pour le rendre plus visible. J'aurais recadré encore plus, mais avec 26MP à ma disposition, on risquerait de perdre des détails sur l'oiseau, et également de perdre le contexte.

Expose for the highlight is the mantra when using a Leica M10, which often means in a situation like this « from the hip » shot, set the Exposure value (EV) at -.7 stop. She was very colourful in a sea of drab and sad winter people, and so of course, her colourful clothes are the main attraction and the one thing that needs to pop. //
Exposer pour la lumière est le mantra lorsqu'on utilise un Leica M10, ce qui signifie souvent dans une situation comme ce cliché « pris à la sauvette », de régler la valeur d'exposition (EV) à -0,7. Elle était très colorée au milieu d'une mer de gens ternes et tristes d'hiver, et donc bien sûr, ses vêtements colorés sont l'attraction principale et la seule chose qui doit ressortir.
